Bayer CropScience Delivers Comprehensive Safeguard with TraitGuard

October 10, 2012

A bad crop year is a risk growers need not face alone. To mitigate these risks, Bayer CropScience has developed TraitGuard™, a solution for farmers that offers an unparalleled level of support in early season canola protection. Part of the Liberty® & Trait Agreement (LTA), the package protects growers from early season crop establishment risk by refunding the trait fee that is included in the cost of each bag of InVigor® hybrid canola and other LibertyLink® canola seeds.

“I reseeded 346 acres this year due to blowout from a windstorm, and half a section that germinated and then died,” said Will Schroeder, an InVigor grower for more than 10 years from Elm Creek, MB. “TraitGuard offers a nice bit of a break.”

TraitGuard provides care not only when growers reseed back to InVigor, but those who experience early season crop failure.  The protection package delivers an unmatched level of support for unpredictable seeding conditions, through an understanding that growers never know what may impact crop yield.

“This year I had 80 acres out of production due to rain, and an additional 192 acres that needed to be reseeded due to insects,” said Rodney Fulford, an InVigor grower since 2004 from Minitonas, MB.  “Bayer covered the cost for half the seeds needed for reseeding.  I was pleasantly surprised by the level of support TraitGuard was able to provide.”

Since the program’s inception in 2009, more than 5,900 TraitGuard claims have been processed.  The program has not only helped growers reseed 260,000 acres over the last three years, but has supported them with 983,000 acres of crop taken out of production.

“We are committed to sharing some of the risk with farmers to help make their operation a success,” said James Humphris, Manager, Oilseed Crops – Herbicides and Trait Agreement, Bayer CropScience.  “Early season crop failure can occur from a myriad of reasons, and so it’s important to offer comprehensive support.”

For acres:
- Taken out of production, growers may receive $12.50/acre, up to a maximum of $125 per bag
- Reseeded back to InVigor, growers may receive $25/acre, up to a maximum of $250 per bag
- Reseeded to any other crop type or variety, growers may receive $12.50/acre, up to a maximum of $125 per bag
