Growers seeding canola late still have good short season canola hybrids available

June 3, 2010

Excessive moisture has delayed seeding for canola growers across much of the Prairie Provinces. With crop insurance deadlines fast approaching, growers may be worried about availability of short season canola varieties.

Brad Ewankiw, Portfolio Manager for InVigor Seed with Bayer CropScience, recommends growers check with their local retailer as there are still many InVigor hybrid canolas available which are suited for shortened growing seasons.

“Each year the weather is different, but now that it’s June, growers may be considering something in the early maturity category,” advises Ewankiw. “We have products like InVigor 5020, 8440, 9590, and 5440 that fit this category without giving up the vigorous growth and yield potential that is required to grow a high yielding crop of canola.”

“Ask any canola grower who has grown InVigor and they’ll tell you that no matter where it’s grown or what variety, nothing outperforms InVigor,” says Ewankiw. “I’d encourage growers to check with their local retail to determine what the best variety is for their situation.”
