Leaf stripe

Systemic disease found in parts of Western Canada, particularly in the Peace River region. Usually first appears on seedling leaves, but may not show up until just before heading. Seedling leaves have long yellow or yellowish green stripes by leaf veins. Striped tissues turn brown and tear between veins, giving leaves a shredded appearance. Infected plants are stunted and heads fail to emerge from the boot. Heads that do emerge are blighted, misshapen and produce few seeds which are shriveled and discolored. Infected plants may wither and die and are noticeable as the crop matures.

Scouting

Scout seedling crops for striping of leaves. Scout again near heading for yellow stripes on leaves and shredded appearance. At heading, check for blighted, misshapen heads.

Control

Some resistant barley cultivars have been developed. Seeding into warm soils (>15º C) reduces risk of infection. Raxil T and Vitaflo 280 seed treatments protect against Leaf Stripe.
