Phytophthora root rot

Phytophthora root rot affects many crops, most notably ginseng, apples and raspberries.  The pathogen affects underground tissue, which in the case of ginseng is the harvested portion.
It is caused by a soil-borne fungus.  Symptoms on the root include dark brown to black lesions that are quite often wrapped around the root.  Areas of fields and orchards with poor drainage are most at risk.
