Pearleaf blister mite
(Eriophyes pyri)

Overview

The species Eriophyes pyri is commonly known as the Pear-leaf Blister Mite. This species is a common pest to apple and pear orchards in Canada. The damage received from this pest results in fruit spots and blistered leaves. In cases of heavy infestation, damage can result in fruit that is completely unmarketable.

Main description

The eggs of the species E. pyri are a dull white colour with an oval shape. The adult is white or light red in colour and reaches approximately 0.25 mm in length. The typical damage seen is the blistering of leaves. The presence of this mite can be easily confirmed by opening the blisters and by observing the arthropods with 20X magnification lens.

Scouting

When scouting for Pear-leaf blister mite, inspect the undersides of pear leaves for incipient blisters. The blisters will appear as small, greenish pimples that take on a reddish color, and later, turn yellow and brown. If infestation levels are evidently high, then control measures are recommended.
