Overview
The species Conotrachelus nenuphar is commonly known as plum curculio and is one of the most important insects attacking tree fruits in Canada ranging from apples, nectarines, plums, cherries and peaches. Damage from this insect occurs through feeding from larvae and adult forms, resulting in a typical crescent moon shaped scars on the fruit.
Main description
The adult Plum curculio is a small, rough snout beetle measuring up to 6 mm in length. It ranges in colour from black to brown. The larvae are whitish with a brown head, do not have legs and can reach up to 9 mm in length. The larvae also feature slight tapering at both ends. The eggs are white and elliptical in shape.
Scouting
Scouting should take place during petal fall. Tap foliage or limbs in the morning with a beating tray below and count the number of pest present.
