Stink bug
(Euschistus servus)

Overview

The species Euschistus servus is commonly known as the stink bug and can be found throughout Southern Canada. The stink bug is a pest of a variety of crops ranging from grain to nuts to fruit crops, and can often result in severe losses if not identified and controlled early in the season.

Main description

The eggs of the stink bug are most often yellow to a translucent and will turn pink as they near maturity. The nymphs greatly resemble the adults but are smaller, oval and are usually pale green in colour. The adults are brown, long in shape and have the appearance of a shield. They are greyish-yellow in colour and reach up to 15 mm in length.

Scouting

When scouting for stink bugs, use sweep nets or shake plants over a drop cloth. Adults tend to aggregate, so sample several areas in each field. Combine counts of older nymphs and adults. Economic thresholds vary for the numerous species; however, if 20-30 insects are collected per 100 sweeps, then chemical control measures may be required.
