Adults are white moths, sometimes with black or orange marks on body and legs.
Two different races of webworm are distinguishable at the larval stage.
To the north of where the webworm exists, larvae have a black head, a yellowish or greenish body with a dark stripe on the back and white hairs that arise from black/orange tubercles. To the south, they have an orange head, and a yellowish-tan body with orange to reddish tubercles and brown hairs.
They are called webworms because of the large webs tehy form on tree branches Young larvae do not feed on the leaf veins, while older larvaie feed on the whole leaf, including the veins.
