Wireworm

Wireworm

The adult wireworm is a dark brown beetle 1 cm to 2 cm in length. It is also known as the 'click beetle' because it has a physiological mechanism that allows it to turn itself over when it gets flipped over on its back.

The wireworm feeds on the roots and seeds of host plants. Damage in fields that were directly seeded usually takes the form of patchy germination. Damage to the root systems of transplants can result in stunted growth and reduced yield and quality. Crops with large tubers such as potatoes, rutabagas and carrots may have pits or bore holes in them.
