Overview
The species Setaria faberi is a very competitive summer annual grass that is able to reduce yields in many crops. Giant foxtail forms a seed head that resembles a fox’s tail hence its name. The grassy weed is common to many areas of North America and flourishes in areas of fertile soils, where crops normally occur.

Seedling
The seedling leaf sheaths are mostly rough; however, the leaf blades have numerous short hairs.
Mature plant
The mature plant of Giant foxtail exhibits leaf blades that are covered in short hairs, with extremely long blades reaching up to 45 cm in length. The stems grow erect and are usually hairless, reaching a height of approximately 120 cm. The formation of a drooping seed head is a distinct characteristic of Giant foxtail.
Optimal growth conditions
The grassy weed S. faberi prefers low lands, cultivated fields and grows better on fertile, sandy soils.
