Overview
The species Panicum miliaceum is an annual warm season grass occurring mainly in Eastern Canada. Emergence of Proso millet usually occurs in the third week of May, depending on weather conditions. Germination and emergence of this weed continues throughout the season. Plants may emerge after cereal crops have been harvested and these late-emerging plants may still be capable of producing seeds before fall frost arrives.

The seedlings grow rapidly into upright plants which may tiller at low densities.
Mature plant
Leaf blades are more or less hairy on both surfaces and on the edges. They are one to two cm wide and up to 30 cm long. Leaf sheaths are densely hairy and have overlapping margins. The ligule (projection from the inner surface of the leaf sheath at the point where the leaf blade meets the stem) consists of a line of dense hairs and there are no auricles (little hooks surrounding the base of the leaf blade) in the plant.
Optimal growth conditions
Proso millet is a drought and heat tolerant grassy weed that poses a serious competition for many crops commonly found in Eastern Canada.
