Overview
The genus Amaranthus is comprised of the family of plants known as pigweeds, the most important of which is A. retroflexus, or Red-root Pigweed. Pigweeds are erect growing summer annuals plants that germinate from seed and are very resilient under several environmental conditions. They produce extraordinarily large volumes of seed which can remain dormant in the soil for years prior to germination.
Main description
Seedling
The seedlings of all pigweeds grow long and narrow and have a red appearance underneath.
Mature plant
The varying species of pigweed can grow either erect or prostrate. The stems of all pigweeds are often tinged with a pink colour.
Optimal growth conditions
A diversity of soil conditions can be favorable to Amaranthus, as long as nutrients are available and soil moisture is below field capacity.
