Fusarium is a seedling disease that thrives under cool conditions. Symptoms include pre- and post-emergent damping off, seedling blight, seed decay and seedling root rot. Seeds may fail to germiniate and if they germinate, will often fail to emerge.
Emerged seedlings may appear normal but have significant root rot. Wirestem symptoms exhibited, the hypocotyl is severly shrivelled. It has poor stand establishment.
Scouting
In early season, check for reduction in plant stands or generally low vigour in existing stands. Dig up weak plants and check root for signs of damage.
Control
Maximize conditions for rapid stand establishment. Deeper seedling increases the chance for infection. Crop rotation of three to four years between canola or mustard crops. Control volunteer canola and other cruciferous weeds. Prosper seed treatment will protect against both soil-borne infections of Fusarium and Pythium.
