Smooth brome grass begins growth early in the spring allowing it to access soil nutrients and available water. It is quite tall and often shades native plants. It produces deep roots and a dense mat of underground stems. The seeds can germinate under a wide variety of soil, moisture and light conditions and can stay viable in the soil for five years.
