Smooth crabgrass
(Digitaria ischaemum)






Overview

The species Digitaria ischaemum is a summer annual that exhibits prostate growth and is propagated by seed. Smooth crabgrass is a grassy weed with prolific seed production which makes it more competitive. This weed emerges around early May through to September under favourable environmental conditions.

Main description

Seedling
The sheaths and blades of the smooth crabgrass seedling are non hairy, with an upright growth.

 

Mature plant
The mature plant has the distinct characteristic growth of prostrate stems, typically lying on the ground, but with tips ascending up to 60 cm long. The leaves are hairless and may turn dark red or maroon with maturity. 

Optimal growth conditions

Smooth crabgrass can tolerate high temperatures and low moisture content. It is commonly found growing in lawns, golf courses and waste areas.
