Volunteer canary seed
(Phalaris canariensis)

Overview

The species Phalaris canariensis is commonly known as canary seed. Canada is one of the top producers of this crop, emphasizing the fact that the conditions within Canada are optimal for the growth of this plant species. However, as a grassy weed, P. canariensis can be a problem in cropping areas, especially for cereal crops. Canary seed is not a highly competitive species; however, it is known to be susceptible to the disease Septoria spp, thus enhancing the importance of scouting and controlling this grassy weed.

Main description

Seedling
The seedlings of P. canariensis appear spindly upon emergence but will begin to tiller at the four leaf stage.

Mature plant
The stems of the mature plant can grow erect or ascending. At maturity the plant can reach up to 100 cm

Optimal growth conditions

This is a weed that grows well in typical agricultural lands, as for example in the Canadian Prairies, where the plant can be prevalent in or around commercial crops in the region.
