Overview
The common oat is a cereal grain found growing throughout Canada. However, when volunteer oats grows as a weed it can be highly competitive and result in significant yield losses due to its vigorous growth.

Mature plant
The species A. sativa can grow to reach upwards of 5 feet through its erect growth. The leaves are non-auriculate (without hooks surrounding the base of the leaf blade), green and the sheaths are rounded on the back.
Optimal growth conditions
Volunteer oat prefers growing in light to heavy soils. It requires well-drained soil and can grow in heavy clay and nutritionally poor soils. The plant can grow on most pH types, including very acidic soils. Volunteer oats requires dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought.
