Application Tips

Insect Control Tips and Timing

  • Apply when insects or insect damage appears
  • When a dosage range is indicated, use a lower rate on younger plants and early instars, and higher rates on mature plants, advanced instars and adults
  • Rainfastness: 2 hours
    Grazing Intervals:
  • Dairy: 48 hours
  • Meat: 24 hours

Apple Thinning Tips and Timing

  • Apple thinning is a process by which fruitlets are removed from apple trees early in the season. This allows for the remaining fruitlets to grow into larger fruit, which are more desirable for customers. Apple thinning can be done manually by walking through the orchard and removing fruitlets at the ideal time.  Sevin XLR can also be used for thinning, as it causes the majority of fruitlets to fall off, leaving only the king bloom, which is the most desirable fruitlet. Application timing is very important as this will determine the success of using Sevin XLR for thinning.
  • Apply when fruitlets are between 3 mm and 20 mm under ideal conditions or approximately 10 to 25 days after full bloom
  • For most consistent thinning affect, apply Sevin XLR when daytime temperatures will be above 21°C for three days, and during period when foliage remains moist for 30 minutes
  • Early morning is a good time to spray when temperatures are climbing and trees are becoming physiologically active
  • Evenings are also good because trees remain wet longer and, in most conditions, will dry as the next day begins
