Premium Markets, Premium Yields

InVigor Health canola hybrids target specialty oil market

Foods made with trans-fat free cooking oil continue to be in high demand. And because one of the main sources is canola oil, producers who have contracted to grow this type of specialty canola are reaping the rewards by getting premiums for the products they produce.

However, one thing producers haven’t been able to get is a canola variety or hybrid that combines the traits necessary to produce healthy oil that is also high performing and high yielding. That is, until now.

Introducing InVigor Health, a line of InVigor canola that is specifically designed for the character-trait, specialty oil market. This oil, which is extremely stable even at high cooking temperatures, does not require hydrogenation and is preferred by processors to eliminate trans fat and reduce saturated fat content in foods.

According to Lionel Lamont, Bayer CropScience Manager of Canola Business Operations for North America, growers are going to be able to get the best of both worlds – InVigor canola that brings a premium for a specific end use market.

“Growers will benefit by having the best canola working for them in the field agronomically and then taking advantage of market premiums once it’s off the field,” Lamont says. “And InVigor Health gives us the opportunity to participate in a growing market segment that will continue to keep InVigor at the head of the industry.”

Bayer CropScience formed an alliance three years ago with Cargill to supply high stability cooking oil to Cargill’s food industry customers who are looking for a consistent supply of identity preserved cooking oil. For that reason, the InVigor Health seed will only be available to growers who contract with Cargill.
